We’re restoring Kingsley Hall, our Grade II* listed home in Bristol’s Old Market, thanks to generous support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund!

Kingsley Hall has a rich history but the building is deteriorating. We’re preserving its heritage and transforming the Hall, creating a vibrant, welcoming space that will provide training, support and housing for young people who have been homeless, at risk of homelessness or are leaving care. At Kingsley Hall, young people will find the trauma-informed support they need to develop essential skills and build healthy relationships, self-belief and good mental health, paving their way to education and employment.

Using money raised by National Lottery players, The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports projects that connect people and communities with the UK’s heritage. Our Kingsley Hall Heritage Project is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we can continue to explore Kingsley Hall’s vibrant social history with young people, create opportunities for young people to build their skills and confidence, and co-deliver a fully restored and transformed safe place for young people in the heart of Bristol. Explore these pages to help us hit our fundraising target, find out more about the Heritage Fund, and how young people are shaping the project.

“The heritage project has opened me up to new experiences I would never thought I would get from cooking, and zine making to photography. I love to see where the project will go in the future.”

Are you a young person and want to get involved?

If you are a young person – or know a young person who might be interested – in getting involved in the Kingsley Hall Heritage Project, fill in this form: KHHP Referral Form OR contact heritagereferrals@1625ip.co.uk.

We’ve collaborated with over 450 young people and 40 partners to shape our exciting plans for Kingsley Hall. Here’s what we’re creating:

• Welcoming, safe spaces where young people can overcome isolation, improve their mental wellbeing and create connections

• New training spaces where young people can re-engage in education, gain qualifications and access employment opportunities in a safe, welcoming environment

• A new social enterprise café and training kitchen for Old Market, providing delicious food and drink alongside vital work experience and skills development for young people

• New affordable homes for young people who are ready to live independently

• Great new spaces for hire

In addition to the new community spaces, our project is creating new opportunities for learning and skills development for young people and a wealth of ways to volunteer with 1625.

What do young people think about the re-development of Kingsley Hall?

"I didn't actually realise until speaking to 1625, a bit about the history of Kingsley Hall that it was actually used as a meeting place for the suffragettes, like 1625 …. and it's like a safe place for young people to go. Kingsley hall has been that historically and it's still being used for that same thing. I think it's really amazing that we've carried that on throughout history"
"I love history, it's so important. When I talk about it, it brings me back to what it would be like back then. I don't know how to say but it can change and be a better place. The building [Kingsley Hall] has been there through so many things in history, through generations. All those people, people we don't even know, people that built it, it's crazy.’ "
"It's good to be able to share what Bristol was and is now"
"It's has a clear, strong place in the history of Old Market and in more recent times is seen as a place of refuge and support for young people"
“Knowing about the past and history of something makes you understand your present.”
The heritage youth board has been a really productive, open, and encouraging space for discussion about the project and related topics such as floor plans, photography and research. I have gained insight into new and different ideas and perspectives and learnt about subjects I likely wouldn’t otherwise have had the opportunity to.”
