Young people at the heart

Young people are central to this project. We’ve been working with young people on this project since 2015, testing ideas and finding out what they need from the new Kingsley Hall and which aspects of its heritage resonate with them.

Young people are participating in all aspects of the work, involved in decision-making at every level from shaping the business plan to designing and implementing heritage activities and advising on building plans. Through paid traineeships and apprenticeships to work placements and volunteering, young people are shaping the renovation and project activities.

We’ve found there are lots of creative ways to explore history and heritage, providing young people are the ones making decisions and the histories and themes explored are meaningful to them. Young people have found their voice and discovered new ways to engage through creative activities – whether exploring personal histories through cooking and creating zines to sharing recipes, to photography, poetry and ghost stories…

It’s important to provide opportunities for young people to share their learning, talents, and skills – as trainers and advisers to heritage organisations, as peer educators on heritage in Bristol’s schools and as creative producers.

We have exciting plans to continue exploring heritage and opportunities as we restore Kingsley Hall. Each project is designed to be youth-led, co-produced and shared collaboratively with partners and our local community.

As a local landmark for social change in the city, Kingsley Hall’s rich history provides a platform for young people to develop skills, build relationships, and strengthen their sense of identity, connection and belonging.

Quotes from young people

"We can show people the beauty of our cultures and they help how things have changed."
“The heritage project has opened me up to new experiences I would never thought I would get from cooking, and zine making to photography. I love to see where the project will go in the future.”
