We’re Seeking Board Members!

12th July 2024

Board Members Voluntary / Unremunerated Bristol

About five Board meetings are held a year, mostly in-person and normally in the evening (6.30pm – 9pm)

At 1625 Independent People (1625) we have worked with young people in the South West for over 40 years. We are award-winning experts in providing services for young people who are homeless, leaving care, and at risk of homelessness. Despite multiple and complex needs, over 80% of the young people we support go on to succeed.

We provide much more than just a safe home for young people. We give them a network of people they can trust and a range of specialist support in areas, for example, mental health and job coaching.  A major part of our work is supporting young people into Education, Employment and Training.  We offer young people opportunities they’ve never had, giving them a chance to believe in themselves, take healthy risks and play a positive part in their communities.

2024 onwards is an unbelievably exciting time for 1625, as, alongside our excellent day-to-day work, we have some major projects in their early stages including the renovation of our grade II* listed charity base, Kingsley Hall, on old Market with a new cafe and training spaces.

We’re looking for:

  • One Fundraising Expert – with significant high-level experience in charity fundraising.
  • One expert in any field but we are particularly interested in those with experience of one or more of the following: commercial, community or social enterprises; senior roles in housing management or social care.
  • We welcome applications from first-time Directors/ Trustees and will provide full induction and support.

As a Board Member, you will use your skills, knowledge and experience to work collaboratively with our Executive team to achieve the highest standards of operational performance throughout 1625.

You will be supported on your Board Member journey by a full induction programme and the opportunity to have a Board Buddy to help settle into your new role.

There are 5 evening Board meetings a year, 3-4 additional committee meetings (most in the evenings), an away day and several events with young people who use our services. The young people events are optional but are very informative and fun.

Reflections from our Queer Peer Support Group  At 1625 Independent People, our monthly Queer Peer Support sessions create space for LGBTQ+ young people to come together, connect, and simply be themselves.  Sometimes that looks like deep conversations about identity and belonging. What does it really mean to partner with a charity?  For the organisations we work with at 1625 Independent People, it goes far beyond fundraising. It’s about shared purpose, real human connection, and creating lasting change for young people facing homelessness.  Through our Stronger Together campaign, we spoke to five of our incredible corporate partners to understand what these partnerships look like in practice, and why they […]

For Neurodiversity Celebration Week, we asked young people connected to 1625 Independent People to share what being neurodivergent means to them.  Neurodiversity recognises that people experience and interact with the world in different ways. For many young people, it can shape how they learn, communicate, manage everyday tasks, and understand themselves.  Through their reflections, young people […]
