Jamal’s Journey: Building a Future Through Skill and Determination 

Jamal’s dream has always been clear: to work as a plasterer. 

When Jamal arrived in the UK from Sudan at the age of 17, he was fleeing conflict in his home country. Despite the challenges he faced, he brought with him valuable experience in outdoor rendering and plastering, skills he had developed over several years and was keen to continue using in the UK. 

Learning a New Language and a New Life 

One of Jamal’s first steps was enrolling in ESOL at City of Bristol College to improve his English. Arabic is his first language, and learning English meant not only mastering a new language but also a new alphabet and direction of reading. His determination and ability to adapt were clear from the start. 

Committing to His Dream 

In April 2025, Jamal enrolled on a Site Ready Plastering course through Greenlight Training, giving him the opportunity to gain an industry-recognised qualification. At the time, he was still studying ESOL, but with support, he rearranged his timetable to attend the plastering course during the day and continue his English studies in the evenings. 

These long days demonstrated Jamal’s commitment to his own development. He completed the course and was one of only three students to pass. Thanks to his prior experience, he was even asked to support other students by demonstrating aspects of the work. 

Overcoming Barriers 

After completing both courses, Jamal began applying for jobs. Despite numerous applications, finding work proved difficult, which affected his confidence, mental health and sleep. This was made harder by worrying news from friends and family in Sudan, where the civil war has continued since 2023. 

One significant barrier was the requirement for a CSCS card, essential for working on construction sites. Through an EET bursary, Jamal was supported with revision materials and the CSCS test app. He worked tirelessly, translating test questions by hand from English into Arabic. With further support, a CSCS test was arranged with an Arabic translator. 

Jamal did not pass on his first attempt, but he remained determined. After more revision and completing a CSCS course through the Jobcentre, he retook the test and passed. On the day he received his result, he sent a message saying: 

“Hi Jun, last Friday I took the CSCS exam and I passed.” 

It was a proud moment and a major step forward. 

Persistence Pays Off 

With his CSCS card secured, Jamal returned to job searching but continued to face barriers due to a lack of site experience. After several setbacks, he accepted night-shift work in a warehouse in Avonmouth. While grateful to be working, he found the role tiring and challenging. 

Soon after, Jamal was offered a two-week work placement through Greenlight Training on a construction site in Bristol. He impressed the company with his skill, work ethic and attitude and was offered a full-time role as a plastering improver. 

A Dream Realised 

Today, Jamal is working full time as part of a plastering team across building sites in Bristol, doing the work he has always wanted to do. 

When asked how he feels about his new job, Jamal simply replied: 

“Yes, I am so happy.” 

Jamal’s journey is a powerful example of resilience, determination and the impact of the right support at the right time. We are incredibly proud of everything he has achieved and excited to see where his future takes him.
