Reflections from our Queer Peer Support Group<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

At 1625 Independent People<\/strong><\/a>, our monthly Queer Peer Support<\/strong> sessions create space for LGBTQ+ young people to come together, connect, and simply be themselves.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes that looks like deep conversations about identity and belonging. Sometimes it\u2019s painting nails, chatting about films, laughing about internet trends, or sharing frustrations and experiences that others in the room instantly understand.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This Pride Month<\/strong>, we wanted to share some reflections from a recent session, where young people spoke honestly about identity, acceptance, community and what Pride means to them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u00a0emerged\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0one single experience, but a reminder that being LGBTQ+ can mean\u00a0very different\u00a0things to different people, and that having spaces where young people feel safe to explore that matters deeply.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFind your people.\u201d<\/b>\u00a0<\/em><\/h3>\n

One of the strongest themes throughout the conversation was the importance of community and finding people who understand and support you.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When asked what advice they would give to another young person struggling with identity or confidence, the answer came quickly:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFind your people.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Another young person added:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFind people that can support you.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

For some, supportive spaces and friendships have made a huge difference in feeling accepted and less alone.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One young person spoke about finding belonging through queer community groups in Bristol:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have [found spaces where I belong]\u2026 find people who get you.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Another reflected on how much it meant to have a foster carer who spoke openly and naturally about sexuality without judgment:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cShe never made me feel like it\u2019s not right\u2026 she made me realise that it\u2019s not that deep.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

These moments of acceptance, whether from carers, friends or community spaces, can have a lasting impact.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pride means different things to different people<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

When the group discussed Pride Month, there wasn\u2019t one shared answer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For some, Pride meant freedom and acceptance in everyday life.<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

One young person reflected:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not really a thing I have to fight for.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Others spoke more broadly about visibility, understanding, and the ways LGBTQ+ experiences are still often misunderstood or questioned.<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

One young person shared a very relatable everyday experience:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEvery time there\u2019s a form and they only have a binary gender option, I\u2019m just like, \u2018What do I even put?\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

This reflects a wider challenge around systems and language not always keeping up with people\u2019s lived realities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, conversations also touched on experiences of judgment, stereotypes and feeling misunderstood, including within families,\u00a0friendships\u00a0and wider society.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One young person reflected on how identity can be shaped by the world around us:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you look at everything through a heteronormative lens, anything close to equality looks abnormal.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

But alongside those frustrations was also\u00a0humour,\u00a0warmth\u00a0and connection, the kind that comes from being in a room where people can speak openly without fear of judgment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Between serious conversations were debates about films, jokes about trends, nail art discussions, and moments of reassurance between friends.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That balance matters too.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why spaces like this matter<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Queer Peer Support sessions aren\u2019t about having all the answers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They\u2019re about creating space where young people can talk honestly, meet others with shared experiences, and feel accepted exactly as they are.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pride Month can be celebratory, emotional, complicated, joyful, or\u00a0all of\u00a0those things at once.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What this conversation reminded us is that every young person deserves spaces where they can explore identity safely, build confidence, and know they are not alone.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As our young people put it: \u201cFind your people.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
