Katie's Story

Let us tell you about Katie, her journey, and how you are vital in helping her transform her life.

"I grew up in Care, and when I left care I went back to live with my Mum, but our relationship wasn’t working. I started sofa surfing around friends houses for a while, until a friend advised me to go to 1625ip Bristol Youth MAPS, when I did. After discussing my situation and options, they said they had space for me there. I was so relieved.

At first, it was hard to settle in and get my head around what I was going with my life. 1625ip offered me activities to get involved in. This gave me something to structure my time, and I always made sure I was on time for sessions.

I became part of the Youth Board, where we discuss ways of improving the service for young people. I have learned some cooking skills in the Skills Kitchen, and go to the drama and art sessions which have helped me improve my confidence. I am getting some qualifications too - I’ve just done my Level 3 for Maths, and I’ve done my Emergency First Aid which I find really interesting.
In the future I’d like to have a job as a support worker – people tell me I’d be good at it! I’d like to in particular work in LGBTQ communities. I’d also love to have a family and my own place one day.

This year has been difficult, and I have found myself struggling and worrying about my future again. But I have stayed in touch with my Support Worker who had to show me how to get online and find things to do, and this made all the difference."
