Symbols of Support Event

Monday 4 July 2011

Five Bristol-based organisations celebrate Supported Housing Month.

Symbols of Support Last week brought together service users and staff from five organisations to celebrate Supported Housing services in Bristol. As part of National Housing Federation's national campaign for Supported Housing Month, each organisation represented a different stage of life and highlighted how important Supporting People funding is to the well being of the city. During an art project called "Symbols of Support" which was facilitated by local artist, Scott Buchanan Barden, service users and staff from each organisation contributed art and images which were then printed onto banners. Five stages of life The five organisations represent all the different stages of life: * A parents service - Young Mother's Group Trust * A children's service - Places for People (Family services) * A youth service - Independent People * An adult service - Addiction Recovery Agency (ARA) * An older people's service - Brunelcare The banners will be displayed outside each organisation starting at Independent People's centre on Old Market Street from June 28th. Peter Walker Addiction Recovery Agency Chief Executive said: “The range of housing and support we provide means we can realistically offer people opportunities to engage in treatment services which will address their drug or alcohol misuse. As a consequence each year more and more people overcome their dependency and go on to lead purposeful lives getting back into education, training or work and often reuniting with children and family. This is a huge achievement for the individual and a massive plus for the community because the cost associated with drug and alcohol misuse is huge.” A few statistics for you....
