Supporting young homeless people in the South West during coronavirus

Young people can find themselves homeless through no fault of their own. When young people present themselves as homeless, they have no one else to turn to. We provide affordable and accessible accommodation. Our work is focused around establishing a trusting relationship with a young person, providing engagement and learning opportunities, and working towards a successful, independent life

After speaking to our young people during this coronavirus crisis, we know that:

  • Young people want to help  their community: using their skills and time to benefit the community.

  • Young people want to take up job opportunities to support others: in food supplies and in health care

  • Young people want to support other young people: we will adapt our engagement with young people so it can be online, and enable peer led support

However, coronavirus means that we have immediate challenges we are responding to now – and we need your support.

During these challenging times 1625ip must now, more than ever carry out our work to ensure that some of the most vulnerable young people in our community are safe.

Our immediate need and challenge is supporting the most vulnerable young people who are isolating or shielding, and are facing the following challenges:

  • Digital exclusion: lack of smartphone,  data, or other technology. This can provide a lifeline to vital information, communication and assistance.

  • Lack of access to essentials e.g. food and toiletries. Young people in isolation cannot and should not leave their home to get these items. Many of them can also not afford to buy food for a whole week.

  • Challenges in mental health and wellbeing: isolation, loneliness, increased anxiety. A need to provide art, puzzles, books, crafts etc to support wellbeing.

  • Maintaining a clean environment in our shared accommodation. We need professional cleaning to reduce the potential exposure to the virus for young people and colleagues in our 24-hour shared accommodation.

Funding

Our core fundraising activities have been put on hold, and we expect a shortfall in our fundraising.

  • Please donate here and ‘Give Monthly’ to sustain and support a young person into independence

  • £25 can buy a selection of books, puzzles, art/craft and entertainment for a young person who is stuck in isolation. It will support their mental health and wellbeing.

  • £25 can provide unlimited data on a smartphone for a month – an essential for a YP who is isolating themselves.

  • Additional professional cleaning in our 24 hour accommodation will cost £13 per young person, per week. Can you donate £13 per week to keep young people and colleagues safe and healthy?

  • £145 can buy a smart phone and 3 months unlimited data for a young person. This can be a lifeline during coronavirus. Can you support us at this time?

Donations

Please contact Jodie at fundraising@1625ip.co.uk if you would like to donate any of these items/ the money towards any of these items. To a young person in isolation, having these items will mean they can receive vital information, communication and assistance.
