Chris Marshall - Project Worker interview
A day in the life of...
Chris Marshall - Project Worker, St George's House
What is your role?
Working with 16-25 year olds in an emergency hostel. I am responsible for personally supporting five young people as their Key Worker. It’s a varied role, each individual young person is different, with different needs, so no two days are the same
How did you get the job?
I saw an advert in the Big Issue which I had only really bought as something to read on the train! I rang up and they sent me an application pack, I was interviewed and soon after offered the job!
Best bit about your job?
Seeing a positive change in the young people. Often when they arrive they have never experienced independent living, there has been some form of relationship breakdown with the family and they may have other issues. After working with us we hope to see positive change and when we do it is very satisfying.
Worst bit?
When as much as you want to, a young person just does not want the support on offer.
Advice for anyone wanting to do your job?
Go for it! It’s very rewarding, but I would advise you to not take things too personally, especially when a young person doesn’t quite reach the goals you have set together.
Who is your inspiration/who do you aspire to be like in your career?
No real inspiration as such, however I do strive to work towards and within my political and social beliefs.
If you could do any other job instead of this one, what would it be?
Ideally I would love set up and run a Direct Access Night Shelter, sadly there a very few remaining in the country.
Where will you be in five years?
I’ll be a fully qualified Social Worker….I hope
