St George's House is a 25 bed hostel for young homeless people in Bristol. It is staffed 24 hrs a day and has a minimum of two staff on at any time. Staff at St George's work with young people and with other services to help identify a young persons needs and, in partnership, provide the support they will need to move into more suitable accommodation (sometimes our own). Regular work is also carried out in the project by City of Bristol College, Young Peoples Drug Treatment Service, The Youth and Play Service, Rathbone, Patchwork, Connexions and Help! Counselling. Who gets to live at St George's House
In November 2006, the Government pledged to end the use of B&B as accommodation for homeless 16 and 17 year olds as part of a national plan in partnership with the voluntary sector and local authorities, to prevent and tackle youth homelessness. Bristol City Council (BCC) has a target to have no 16 & 17 year olds in B&B by end of March 2010 (BCC Young Persons Housing Action Plan 2009-10). St George's House is used as a suitable alternative to bed and breakfast accommodation (B&B).
At St George's House we can only house 16 to 25 year olds that have been referred to us the Bristol City Council Housing Advice Team. Please note we don’t run a waiting list - we request referrals when a room becomes free. We house young people if the Council deems them a priority under Part 7 of the Housing Act , which means the council have a duty to house them or prevent their homelessness.
