Jackie and Jo
(Jackie and) Jo Wallace
at the 2009 Staff Conference
Jo, What team do you work in?

Housing team.

How long have you worked at Independent People?

OMG! Nearly 11 years.

What did you do before?

I was raising my children as a single parent and going to college and also doing voluntary work.

What bit of your job makes you feel good at the end of the day?

When I have managed to get a young person to understand the process of the arrears sytem and how it can affect their future wellbeing. I love it when I have managed to get them to pay their rent/arrears and I feel elated when they actually understand the importance of paying rent/arrears and sticking to it.

What’s the hardest bit of your job?

Repitition...constantly having to do the same thing over and over again with a young person..... for example a young person constantly forgetting to sign on and keep their benefit in place which causes them to accumulate arrears, most times it seems they find this hard to comprehend they do not realise the severity of their actions until it's too late and at times some still do not get it. Another pet hate of mine is going into dirty houses I have had some hellish experiences.

If you were made Prime minister tomorrow who’s the first person you’d hire?

It would have to be my mum....in theory she is much too old for employment at the grand old age of "87 in a minute" but she has lived life and has seen and experienced a lot of changes over the years so would be best equipped to advise me on current affairs including life itself as she is not bigotted in any way shape or form.

If you won 20 million on the lottery what’s the first thing you’d do?

The first thing I would do is contact a financial advisor...I would definitely want to donate 10 million to the orphans in the whole of Africa possibly build my own schools care homes for children from all walks of life especially orphans of Aids sufferers. The remaining 10 mill I would buy a huge house very secluded with a very large landscape and hold the best parties ever.
