Our service

We provide a Support Worker who will visit young people while still in custody (Youth Offending Institution or Secure Unit) before they are released and continue that support once they have been released (hence the name Inside Out).

Together, the young person and the Support Worker draw up and agree a resettlement plan which includes:
  • suitable housing with support
  • education, training and employment
  • positive and structured activities, including sports, leisure, media and arts
  • money
  • family contact
  • health and wellbeing
  • advocacy
We find out what interests or skills they have which might lead to possible training or vocational aspirations and we use this as a tool to help reduce the risk of re-offending.

We aim to help young people step out in a different direction.

Support workers meet the young people on the day they are released, take them to their accommodation and then go with them or encourage them to visit other agencies and access other support.

Inside Out support workers will make sure young people have a support program in place on release, to keep people engaged and to help with reducing of re-offending.

Who we can support

The project can support young people returning to live in one of the following local authority areas:

• Bristol
• Bath and Northeast Somerset (BANES)
• North Somerset
• Somerset
• South Gloucestershire
• Gloucestershire.

Age range

• Age 16-19 and
• Leaving custody on a youth disposal (DTO/Section 91) and
• At risk of leaving custody without settled accommodation or likely to have difficulty sustaining accommodation on release.

We will give priority to planned referrals for young people leaving custody. This can include young people aged 15 who will soon be leaving custody age 16.
We will also consider referrals of young people who have already left custody and require additional support through transitions. (Transitions include: transition from custody to community, YOT to IMPACT/Probation, youth to adult substance misuse and mental health services, when statutory supervision ends).
