Independent People wins Bristol City Council High Support Contract

Wednesday 13 March 2013

1625 Independent People has won Bristol City Council Young People's High Support Contract

1625 Independent People will be working with Knightstone Housing Association (KHA) on a Bristol City Council Young People's High Support Contract to deliver live-in support at St George's House and the Bristol Foyer.

The contract will position Independent People as the largest specialist provider of emergency and supported housing services for 16-25 year olds in the area. The new contract will start on 1st June 2013.

Independent People will run the housing management and support at St George's House, Hotwells and at the Foyer, Bristol Bridge - this includes:
  • Managing the accommodation
  • Assessing and signing up new residents
  • Supporting residents to gain new skills and move to more independent accommodation
  • Provision of extra support from other current services including mental health support, peer support

Knightstone Housing Association logoKnightstone will provide training, education and support services at the Foyer for residents at both schemes, including:
  • Life skills training
  • Foyer programmes such as Open Talent and Working Assets
  • Literacy, media and money skills
  • City & Guilds in Skills for Working Life
  • Media and Youth Music work

The Foyer houses 51 young people, between the ages of 16-21, who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Independent People have managed St Georges House in Hotwells since it opened in 2006, and it continues to house 25 young people from similar backgrounds. Both services provide supported housing, staffed 24 hours each day, offering each young person with a dedicated Support Worker to work with them towards independent living. Referrals to both services are managed through partnership with Bristol City Council's Single Point of Access Team.

The re-commissioning of high support youth services in Bristol this year meant Independent People had the opportunity to not only bid to for their existing service at St George's House but to bid for the contract at the Bristol Foyer as well.

Chief Executive Dom Wood said

We are so pleased to have been awarded the contract and look forward to expanding our reach to more young people in Bristol. Providing a brilliant service for young people is all we are interested in. St George's House has become a cherished and successful part of our organisation, we would have been very sad to see it go.
The Foyer is a purpose-built project with excellent communal and living facilities. Joining services with Knightstone brings an exciting combination of skills with both organisations bringing together the best of their support and training, education and employment skills to provide an even better and stronger service to young homeless people in Bristol.

Sonia Furzland, Assistant Director at Knightstone, said:

We’re really happy to be continuing our good work at the Bristol Foyer. Knightstone has a strong history of providing excellent training, education and employment services to young people through the Foyer, which complements our work with young people in Somerset. We believe strongly in supporting people to improve their skills and increase their chances of employment, especially in the current climate.
We are looking forward to working with 1625 Independent People to provide an excellent service to young people in Bristol.
