1625ip is voted OVO Gives Back partner

Friday 10 June 2016

Staff at OVO Energy have voted to support 1625 Independent People as part of their new OVO Gives Back charity scheme.

The scheme, which will also support St Werburghs City Farm, Forest of Avon Trust and De Paul UK, was set up this year to allow staff to volunteer and fundraise for projects they feel passionate about. The OVO Foundation (OVO Energy's charitable arm) has also donated a whopping £20,000 to each charity from their OVO Community Chest fund. A further £20,000 has been set aside to match fund staff fundraising.

Pilar Garcia, 1625ip Funding Manager, said:
We have been working alongside OVO for a couple of years now in an unofficial capacity  - they’ve supported our Sleep Outs, raising over £50,000, and have enthusiastically volunteered and run fundraising events for us. We are very proud to wear an OVO badge, they are no ordinary company. Not content with offering unfaltering support they have commissioned extensive research into youth homelessness which is an invaluable and much needed resource for the whole homelessness sector. They don't do things by halves, an inspiring and genuinely good organisation.

1625ip will use the £20,000 grant to help increase the capacity of their successful Community Mentoring scheme which was piloted last year and now has a waiting list of both mentors and mentees. The scheme matches people in the community who have time to listen and encourage someone with young people who are moving towards independent living and could benefit from a mentor. They meet once a week and decide on small goals for the young person to achieve with their mentor's support.

The volunteering aspect of the scheme will provide 1625ip with support in various different ways from team challenges and exciting fundraising events, to jointly facilitating skills workshops, like cooking, art, music and sport. Volunteers can also train as one-to-one mentors or share professional skills in strategy and development, HR, admin, finance and marketing.
