1625 Independent People is headline charity at Rotary event

Monday 27 January 2014

1625 Independent People has been named as the headline charity for the 2014 Rotary Bristol Dragon Boat Festival in June.

Sunday 8 June 2014 will see the 13th annual Rotary Dragon Boat Festival (opens in a new window) on Bristol Docks.
The event is organised by the Rotary Club of Bristol Breakfast, who nominate a different charity to be the main beneficiary each year.

2014 is the turn of Bristol born charity 1625 Independent People which works with over one thousand 16 to 25 year olds per year who are at risk or already homeless. They help young people to reboot their lives through family mediation, temporary supported housing, one-to-one support, mentoring, accessing  training and work, managing their money, counselling and many other services.
The charity also prevents youth homelessness by working in schools to help young people understand the realities of leaving home in an unplanned way, through the Bristol Youth Links funded Upfront project.

The Festival has raised over £460,000 for charities so far and continues to grow in popularity. Baltic Wharf is lined with people cheering their teams on, bringing BBQs and pitching up for the whole day.

Chief Executive of 1625 Independent People said:

The event works because it’s a partnership of local businesses and community, it’s generally businesses who stump up the entry fee and their crews then raise sponsorship. If local businesses didn’t get involved and sponsor the boats it wouldn’t be the amazing fundraising event it is. It’s a great day with many boat crews racing in full fancy dress, everyone has a brilliant day – winning or not.
The charity Is 30 years old this year, we’ve been attending this event for five of those years, so to be nominated is a really good birthday present! We thank the Rotary Club of Bristol Breakfast  for this amazing opportunity and for putting on such a great event.
